Founders Friday: Building a Foundation
It’s time for Founders Friday once again! This week I’ll be talking about the newly formed It’s Your Haven Foundation.
If you missed our *multiple* announcements, that’s ok! There’s a lot going on in the world right now. I’ll catch you up eeezy peeezy.
As of October 18th, HavenCon now falls under The It’s Your Haven Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
The formation of the foundation comes after a lot of thought and hard work. I wanted to do something that gives back to the community that has given me so much.
The geek/gaymer community helped shape me, it was there for me during some of my darkest times in life. It has had more of an influence on me than anything else, except maybe my grandmother (but that’s another story).
Whether it was comics, sci-fi/fantasy movies or MMOs (oh so many hours in WoW, SWG, DAOC and others too numerous to name), I always had a home with my fellow LGBT+ geeks/gamers.
So for me, the foundation is a way to ensure that those groups, creators, players, and those needing a place to be themselves or..sometimes..lose themselves for just a bit..can find each other and support each other.
But more than that, we want to help those creating the worlds we all escape to. We want to help them find the funding they need (and provide some too!), and help them reach the people who need and want these creations.
And that is the mission of It’s Your Haven.
Moving forward, once we have found OUR foundation (haha) and are able to start working on things in earnest, it is my hope to create the first fund for marginalized creators. And here’s how I see it working (this may change, we have to make sure we do things the right way and will be seeking legal advice/guidance in the creation of the fund):
You are a creator, and perhaps you are ready to launch a new comic book that has queer characters etc.
Prior to launch, you contact us (probably through some application form) and tell us what your project is and how much you are requesting.
When your application is approved and your project launches, we will contribute x amount from the foundation to your project and help boost your project by sharing it with our network.
Other ways we may be able to assist is with tables at one of our shows (we are currently planning a new show shhhhh!)
And of course the list of ideas goes on and on..but that’s what I see being our focus in the immediate future. Really giving back to creators.
How do we accomplish this? Well, that’s a work in progress, but RIGHT NOW we’re asking for the community to pitch in while we seek alternative funding sources.
BEST WAY? Pre-register for HavenCon and if you have a little extra to kick in, use the donate field. 30% of your ticket and 100% of your donation is tax-deductible.
We still have A LOT of work to do, and it’s my goal to bring in professionals that know what they are doing and can set us on the right path to becoming the best LGBT+ organization we can be.
So that’s kind of it right now (oh is THAT all?). I can tell you the entire team here at HavenCon are super excited to see you all again, I know I’m ready for this (in a totally not at all ready omg 153 days to go way).
Have a great weekend everyone, and we’ll see you again soon!
P.S. Did you see we’re giving away to 2 free nights at HavenCon 4? Help us reach more people and you could get a nice little room package thanks to the DoubleTree team (they’re pretty awesome).
